Workshops
The following workshops taking place during summer 2007 may be of interest to Goldschmidt delegates.
International School of Isotope Geology
Applications from PhD students and young researchers to the "International School of Isotope Geology, frontiers in petrogenesis and magmatology, and applications to archaeometry and environmental sciences"
| Dates: | June 17-22, 2007 |
| | (one month before the Goldschmidt Conference) |
| Location: | Hotel Castagnola, Verbania-Pallanza, Italy |
| Convenors: |
Elisabetta Rampone (University of Genoa - GNP),
Albrecht W. Hofmann (Max Planck Institut für Chemie - Mainz),
Lorella Francalanci (University of Florence - GIV),
Lucia Civetta (University of Naples – Osservatorio Vesuviano INGV),
Sonia Tonarini (IGG - CNR Pisa),
Maurizio Mazzucchelli (University of Modena - GNP),
Riccardo Petrini (University of Trieste - GIV) and
Luca Simonotti (ThermoScientific). |
The school aims to provide cultural and scientific background on the applications of Isotope Science to geology, archaeometry and environmental sciences. Beside traditional isotopes used in geosciences (e.g., Sr, Nd, Pb, U/Th), new isotope systematics (e.g. Al, Mg, Fe, Ca, Cr, Li) will be also addressed. ThermoScientific and GVI experts will give introductions to mass spectrometry equipments.
For more information see the workshop website.
9th EMU School
The European Mineralogical Union will organise a summer school on ‘Nanoscopic Approaches in Earth and Planetary Sciences’
| Dates: | August 12 to 17 |
| | (one week before the Goldschmidt Conference) |
| Location: | LMU Munich |
| Conveners: | Frank Brenker (JWG University, Frankfurt), Guntram Jordan (LMU, Munich) |
The number of participants is limited. For more information see the workshop website.
IODP Topical Symposium: North Atlantic and Arctic Climate Variability
The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Management International will convene a topical symposium in 2007 on the topic of 'North Atlantic and Arctic Climate Variability,' to provide researchers the opportunity to convene and discuss the current state of affairs in this important oceanographic setting.
| Dates: | August 15 to 16 |
| | (one week before the Goldschmidt Conference) |
| Location: | Bremen, Germany |
| Conveners: | Contact Kelly Kryc (kkryc@iodp.org) at IODP-MI for more information |
The topical symposium will include 15 keynote lectures by scientific leaders on the topic of North Atlantic and Arctic Climate Variability. All topical symposium participants are encouraged to contribute to the symposium by bringing a poster. The lectures and posters will be organized within four main topics: Millennial-Scale Climate Dynamics; Milankovitch Scale Climate Variability; Evolution of Northern Hemisphere Glaciation; and Extreme Warm Events.
The topical symposium will be held in Bremen, Germany, August 15-16, 2007. Rooms have been reserved at special rates for symposium attendees and can be reserved through the IODP-MI online registration form (www.iodp.org/topical-symposium). There is a registration fee of $50.00 for professional registrants and $10.00 for student registrants. Funding is available to help offset the costs of students and post-doctoral researchers who would like to attend the symposium.
Fluid-Fluid Equilibria in the Crust
The Mineralogical Society of America and the Geochemical Society announce a Short Course on ‘Fluid-Fluid Equilibria in the Crust’
| Dates: | Thursday and Friday August 16-17, 2007 |
| | (immediately preceding the Goldschmidt Conference) |
| Location: | Institute of Geology and Mineralogy, University of Cologne, Cologne, Germany |
| Convenors: | Axel H. Liebscher, Institute for Applied Geoscience, Technical University of Berlin, and Christoph A. Heinrich, ETH Zurich, Switzerland. |
For more information see the workshop website.
Quality Assurance in Analytical Geochemistry Pre-conference workshop at Goldschmidt 2007
| Date and time: | Sunday, 19 August 2007; from 10:00 to 16:00 |
| Location: | To be held at the University of Cologne |
In conjunction with the 2007 Goldschmidt conference, the International Association of Geoanalysts (IAG: http:geoanalyst.com) will be sponsoring a one-day workshop devoted to quality assurance and best practices for the analysis of Earth materials. The main focus of this workshop will be the analysis of silicates using both whole rock and micro-analytical techniques, though other fields of interest to the analytical geochemist will also be presented.
Registration via E-mail: Thomas.Meisel@mu-leoben.at (deadline: 1 August 2007)
